Key figures and rescue operations
Janis (Janis) Lipka and his wife Johanna: Lipka, a porter in Riga, was considered one of the most prominent rescuers in Latvia (H11-19f, H11-20-2f). He used his position as head of Jewish Luftwaffe work groups in the so-called "Red Warehouses" (Sarkanie ambari) to smuggle Jews out of the ghetto (H11-9f, H11-25f). Together with his wife Johanna, he managed to save about 55 Jews (H11-19f, H11-20-8f).
Yitzhak Kalvansky: A survivor from the city of Liepaja, whose story is documented in great detail. Anna Alma Pola: A brave woman who hid a group of Jews in her home in Riga (H11-21f, H11-20-13-6f). She was arrested by the Gestapo in August 1944 and murdered after refusing to reveal the hiding place, but the Jews she hid in a bunker under her house managed to survive (H11-20-12f, H11-21f).
Dr. Benjamin Landa and his wife Anna: A Jewish doctor who was saved in the Subate area thanks to the resourcefulness of Robert Baludis andRobert Kennish (H11-22f). Landa, who studied medicine in Berlin and Basel, survived in extremely difficult hiding conditions on isolated farms, sometimes in haystacks (H11-22f, H11-23f).
Emile Rasnais: Director of an orphanage in Riga (Orphanage No. 3), who saved Dr. Ina Michelson-Friedman When she was a child, at great personal risk (H11-12f, H11-24f).
Key events and locations
