נחמיה ארגוב – Nehemiah Argov

Nehemiah was born to Joshua-Chaim and Zipporah Nimvitin in Riga. His father was one of the founders of the Hebrew Gymnasium "Toshiya" In the city, he served as a teacher and director of the institution and was also active in the Mizrahi movement. Nehemiah Argov was a member of the Zionist movement "Hashomer Hatzair – Netsach" in his youth and completed his high school studies at "Toshiya". In 1935, Argov immigrated to Israel.

In Israel he joined the Haganah and was among the founders of Kibbutz Ein Gev. He left the kibbutz in 1940 and moved to Haifa, where he served as the Haganah's information officer in the city and was later appointed as the city commander's aide. He later served as a lieutenant to the Haganah's chief of staff, Yaakov Dori.

When David Ben-Gurion moved to Tel Aviv at the end of 1947, Argov headed the guard entrusted to him by the "Hagana". With the establishment of the state, he was appointed as David Ben-Gurion's military aide and in January 1950 he was appointed his military secretary with the rank of lieutenant colonel and then colonel. In early 1952, Argov took a course for battalion and brigade commanders and in early 1955 he completed a parachuting course. Ben-Gurion trusted Argov so much that in his absence he allowed him to sign documents on his behalf.
