פרטים אישיים והשכלה

• זהות ולידה: נולד בריגה, לטביה, ב-26 בינואר 1901 (מקור אחד מציין 1903) להוריו דבורה ואביגדור. נפטר ב-31 בינואר 1966.
• השכלה תיכונית: למד בגימנסיה "אלכסנדרובסקיה" בריגה ובגימנסיה בפטרוגרד, אותה סיים ב-1918 עם מדליית זהב.
• השכלה גבוהה: הוסמך כמהנדס כימיה (ולעיתים מוזכר כאגרונום) לאחר לימודים באוניברסיטת לטביה (הפוליטכניקום של ריגה) בשנת 1923.

פעילות בלטביה

• קריירה חינוכית: עסק בהוראה וניהול בערים דגדה ולוזה. בין השנים 1924–1934 לימד מתמטיקה, פיזיקה, כימיה וקוסמוגרפיה בגימנסיה העברית הממשלתית ברזקנה. הוא נודע במסירותו יוצאת הדופן לתלמידיו, שכללה ארגון פעילויות חוץ-בית ספריות וסיוע כלכלי לנזקקים.
• פעילות ציבורית וציונית: היה חבר מרכזי בתנועות "צעירי ציון" ו"השומר הצעיר", חבר בוועד המרכזי של קרן היסוד וקק"ל בלטביה, וציר בקונגרס הציוני בציריך (1929). בנוסף, כיהן כחבר בוועדת הסעד הסוציאלי של מועצת העיר רזקנה.
• מעצר ועלייה: באפריל 1934 נעצר בשל השתתפות בהפגנה נגד הממשל ונשלח למחנה ריכוז בליבאו. לאחר שחרורו בתחילת 1935, עלה לישראל עם אשתו דובה ב-6 במאי 1935.

חיים ופעילות בישראל

• תעסוקה: לאחר קשיי קליטה ראשוניים כמהנדס, השתלב בקופת חולים כללית, שם ניהל את מחלקת האספקה ועבד במחלקת "מס מקביל". במקביל, היה חבר בהסתדרות הכימאים בארץ-ישראל.
• פעילות קהילתית וביטחונית:
  • היה פעיל במועצה לקואופרציה צרכנית בתל אביב.
  • שימש כגזבר וכחבר פעיל בארגון יוצאי לטביה ואסטוניה.
  • התנדב במשמר האזרחי בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה ושירת בשורות ה**"הגנה"** בשמירה על גבולות תל אביב-יפו.

• כתבים ותחומי עניין: הותיר אחריו כתבים המעידים על ידע רב בהיסטוריה ויהדות (בפרט על תקופת עזרא ונחמיה) וכן דפים הכוללים חישובים ונוסחאות במתמטיקה.
• משפחה: היה נשוי לדובה (ייתכן והיו אלו נישואיו השניים) והותיר אחריו שתי בנות. למשפחתו היו קשרים גם בארה"ב, ביניהם קרוב משפחה בשם ד"ר אלפרד חנוטין מאוניברסיטת וירג'יניה.
