📜 Portrait of a Leader and Economist: Prof. Dr. Benjamin (Zeev) Ziv (1879–1947)

Prof. Dr. Benjamin Ziv (also known in sources as Dr. B. Siew) was a key figure who connected economics and journalism in Latvia with the development of economic academia in Israel. A man of the Eshkolot movement, a senior economist and a militant publicist, who dedicated his life to strengthening the economy of the country and his community.

🌍 From Riga to the Latvian Influence Summit Dr. Ziv was born in Lithuania, received his education at the universities of Berlin, Sorbonne and Königsberg, and was awarded a doctorate in philosophy and political economy. After research activities at the Russian Ministry of Finance, he arrived in Riga in 1918 and became one of the most influential figures in young Latvia.

• In the press: From 1920 he edited the economic section of the important daily newspaper "Segodnya", where he expertly analyzed economic life in Latvia and the Baltic states.
• In government: He served as an official advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Finance and served on the Economic Council under the government from the day it was established.
• State recognition: For his extraordinary contribution to strengthening the Latvian economy, he was awarded the country's highest honor – Order of the Three Stars.

🛡️ At the forefront of the Jewish struggle In 1933, with the rise of the Nazis to power, Dr. Ziv headed the boycott movement against German goods in Latvia. He was sent to London as a representative of Jewish organizations to coordinate the international boycott, where he met with prominent Jewish leaders such as Lord Melchett and Nabil Laski.

🇮🇱 Chapter on the Land of Israel and Academic Heritage In 1934, Dr. Ziv immigrated to Israel. Immediately upon his arrival, he devoted his energy to two central areas:

1. Assistance for immigrants: He launched an extensive aid project for Jewish refugees from Latvia and Soviet Russia, out of a deep commitment to the members of his community.
2. Higher education: Was between Founders of the Tel Aviv School of Law and Economics, where he served as professor and head of the Faculty of Economics, and produced generations of economists.

📚 The Book Man Dr. Ziv left behind an extensive written legacy of over ten books and hundreds of articles. Among his important books in Hebrew are: "Money and Credit in the Land of Israel" (1936) and "Theory of Political Economy" (1938).

🕯️ Memory and commemoration Dr. Benjamin Ziv died in Tel Aviv on December 12, 1947. As an expression of the immense appreciation for his work on behalf of Latvian and Estonian immigrants and his close connection to the community, The "Union of Latvian and Estonian Emigrants" planted a forest in his memory in the forests of the Jewish National Fund.
