These sources include Historical and personal documentation Pertaining to the Jewish community inLiepaja, Latvia, and in particular to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust. The collection consists ofYiddish manuscripts which detail events and life histories, alongside Name lists In Russian, of friends and family members who perished under the Nazi occupation. In addition, there is Official correspondence in Latvian from 1991 accompanying the publication of a memoir written by historian Liga Alsana. These documents, which also include Family tree records and contact information, are used asGilad Zichron to a community that was destroyed. The collection of materials highlights the effort to preserve Jewish identity and local heritage for future generations.

The documents before us document efforts to commemorate the Jewish community of Liepāja/Libau in Latvia, and include lists of survivors, testimonies of the Holocaust, and names of victims.

Commemorating the Libau Community and the Book of Remembrance Project

The main commemorative work described in the sources is the preparation of the "Libau Memorial Book". The project was managed by Edward Anders, who in July 2000 reported significant progress: the database included at that time 6,380 names, and the expectation was to reach 6,500-6,600 final names based on data from Yad Vashem and the Soviet Special Committee (H86-3f). The project's mailing lists list hundreds of survivors living in Israel, the USA, Germany and other countries, indicating their wartime status (ghetto, deportation, escape or survival in camps such as Stutthof) (H86-3f).

Documentation of the victims and events of the Holocaust

The sources include detailed Semitic lists of families who perished in the Holocaust in the cities of Liepaja and its surroundings between 1941 and 1945 (H86-8f). Alongside the lists, there is an extensive documentation in Yiddish/Hebrew under the title "Proces 269" (Trial 269), which extends over many handwritten pages and describes events during the war, apparently as part of testimonies or a legal protocol (H86-4f, H86-5f). In addition, there is collaboration with local historians in Latvia, such as Līga Alksne, who wrote a book on the history of the Jews of Liepaja (H86-6f).
